Case Study #2
The Opportunity
One of the world's largest manufacturers of decorative paints and performance coatings developed a high-solids clear coat for automotive applications that required an application temperature elevated near to the curing temperature in order to achieve suitable spray viscosity and atomization properties. Conventional in-line electric heaters proved incapable of raising the clear coat to the proper application temperature without damaging the paint. The customer turned to SCS to create a system capable of attaining and maintaining the elevated temperature necessary to enable the painting process.
The Solution
Working with the paint manufacturer, SCS analyzed the acceptable temperature limits of the formulation and developed and installed (in the customer's lab) a hot-oil-based system capable of quickly reaching and maintaining the required paint temperatures without damaging the delicate clear coat, allowing the system to demonstrate the full capability of the new formulation.
The Results
With the new temperature-control system, the paint manufacturer was able to show the capability of the new clear-coat formulation, demonstrating not only an understanding of the chemistry required to create a coating capable of meeting the desired parameters, but also of developing the process necessary to properly apply that delicate chemistry on a production basis.
